Homebuying Hurdle: Location

June 19, 2018 Homebuying

‘I can’t find any affordable homes in the location that I prefer.”

Finding a home to purchase is a difficult task, especially if the area you prefer is out of your price range.  If you are running into a hurdle with finding a home within your means, then a simple change in mindset is probably all you need. We know that living in the heart of the city has many perks. There are restaurant options galore, nonstop events and a plethora of new people to meet and sights to see. Picturing yourself moving to the outskirts probably comes accompanied with the image of a houseful of kids, donning on some Mom jeans and maybe even some Dad-style cargo shorts. We want you to know that you don’t have to have any of these life milestones checked off in order to purchase a home.  All you need is the itch to stop paying rent!

HOW MUCH HOME CAN YOU AFFORD?

A big plus of living a few miles from the city limits is that you will gain more square footage for your money. Also, residential areas offer old-fashioned things like yards (you know, those big green things) and space for hiking trails! They even offer better school districts than inner-city schools. A better school district will make your home easier to sell in the future. This will come in handy if you need to make a quick move, due to that new job offer you can’t resist! Always make sure the neighborhood you buy into has rising home values. A home in an older neighborhood might be more within your price range. However, check to see if new homes are developing near it. This lets you know that younger families are moving into the neighborhood. An older neighborhood with new home construction is classified as up-and coming, guaranteeing longevity. Moving a few minutes from the city may seem like a long haul from amenities that you’ve grown to love. However, think about all of the times you sat in traffic to get to your next destination. Was that five-mile drive that took thirty minutes during rush hour a longer drive time than the one you took to get to the outskirts? That answer is probably yes. Remember, if you are set on a certain location and can’t move past this hurdle, there is nothing wrong with waiting a few more years to buy into the neighborhood of your dreams. Keep in mind, that your tastes and living situation may even change during this time! Buying a home is a big decision and should never be a spontaneous investment.
