4 Great Houseplants for Beginners

Greenery in the home can create a lavish look while at a low cost. But what if you don’t have much of a green thumb? If you have killed one too many plants from over-watering, under-watering, or just plain ol’ neglect—try picking up one of these 4 houseplants for beginners!

Snake Plant

The snake plant is one of the most common plants for the home due to their reputation of being “unkill-able.” This plant is much more tolerant of low-light indoor conditions and isn’t too particular about watering—as long as it isn’t too much!

Succulents and Cacti

If you are looking for some variety in your houseplants, succulents and cacti make great additions. As desert plants, these houseplants are slow-growing and can withstand a lot of slip-ups. These plants do best with bright light, well-drained pots, and little water. With the right placement, these plants can practically thrive on neglect.

ZZ (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

The ZZ is a semi-succulent and is accustomed to long periods of dry conditions with bursts of rain. This houseplant retains as much water as it can absorb, making it a great choice for frequent travelers (or for those who just forget to water…)

Birds of Paradise

If you have a tendency to over water, the Birds of Paradise is a great choice for your home’s greenery. Native to South Africa, this plant appreciates a warm, humid environment with a fair amount of water. They can tolerate lower light conditions, but they’ll need long-term bright lighting to really thrive. Birds of Paradise are toxic to pets and humans when eaten, so please make sure to place it safely away from any animals or small children.
